Annie of the Arts

Fourth-year student Annie Firth has found a most interesting way to earn some pocket money. Every few months she sits for artists at the Adelaide Art Society on Margaret St (a ten-minute walk from College). Over the last two years she has now accumulated a large collection of portraits!

She found this opportunity via Collegian Lorie Paynter who previously participated in the same type of work and whose portrait still hangs at the Adelaide Art Society. Annie gets called in every few months to pose, sitting or standing, from 10am-1pm while students draw or paint her features. She gets a break every 20 minutes to stretch and a lunch break. She walks away with $90 and some very artistic interpretations of her face.

“I try to keep my clothing simple and wear a primary colour, not a pattern, so as not to make it too complicated,” Annie commented. But when asked if she herself is artistic, she replied “no! I am more of a writer than an artist.”

In her academic journey, Annie is currently finishing her second internship at Society Marketing Communications. She took part in the Adelaide Advertising Design Club’s AdCrawl Program in 2023 and was paired with a graphic designer to create a billboard for the Cancer Council which was flashing in Rundle Mall! Annie is in the fourth and final year of her degree and plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Media with Bachelor of Arts from the University of Adelaide.
